Letter from the President
To our Dental Students, Predental Members, and Supporters:
The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry is one of 66 dental schools throughout the nation with over 90% of our students being members of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), the largest dental student group in the nation. ASDA is a national student-led organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students.
There are several parts of this mission statement that catch my attention:
1) Student-run. ASDA is an opportunity for us, not only as the “future” of dentistry but the “now” of dentistry to have a voice on behalf of the patients we serve.
2) Rights and interests. As dental students, we should have a voice that deserves to be heard. When certain legislation affects the future of the way we practice, we do have an interest, and we should have a voice.
3) Welfare. There’s no doubt dental school is stressful. It’s crucial that we take care of ourselves. ASDA’s wellness initiative serves to remind us to prioritize our health.
As president of the Oklahoma ASDA chapter, I encourage our students to get involved and take advantage of the many opportunities organized dentistry has to offer. Educating our students on the current issues involving the future of the dental profession enables them to understand the importance of having a unified voice for our education and professional life.
I am excited to watch our chapter continue to grow and accomplish new goals. I wish you all success this year and look forward to working with you and for you!
