Letter from the President

Dear Dental Student,

Welcome to the website of the Oklahoma chapter of the American Student Dental Association. ASDA is the largest dental student group in the nation representing 90 percent of all dental students. That’s more than 20,000 students across the country! ASDA also welcomes hundreds of pre-dental students each year. The organization was established to connect, support and advance the needs of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, recreation and representation.

Oklahoma ASDA is the chapter at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. Our goal is simple: we’re here to ensure you the best possible dental school experience. Whether that may be through educational Lunch & Learns to supplement the curriculum, social events to ensure student wellness and to foster faculty-students relationships, or anything else that our students dream up—we are here to provide you with support.

National ASDA hosts several events throughout the calendar year to provide opportunities for personal and professional growth. These include the National Leadership Conference, Annual Session, and ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day. We advance these same goals at a state and local level through programming including (but not limited to) our bi-annual Vendor Fair, Loupes Fair, various Lunch and Learns, GetFit initiatives, Open Wide Golf Tournament, Casino Royale, Pizza and Politics, and Dental Olympics.

I am humbled to have been elected to serve as your President. I work with our immediate past president Lynna Van '19, vice president Mary Temple-Goins '20, treasurer Dylan Droege '20, secretary Jacy Glover '20, legislative liaison Gabe Duffy '20, vendor coordinators Cheryl Fleming '20 and Kate Littlefield '20, historian Ashley Long '20, and president-elect Edith Quiñonez '21, as part of the Oklahoma ASDA Executive Committee. There are also many other dental students on various Committees working diligently to advance the organization. We operate on a track system, so each class has an elected EC that serves on some capacity, maturing to fulfill its full role during the 3rd year. Together, we work hard to serve you and meet your needs throughout your dental school career.

Many schools across the country “auto-enroll” their students to be a part of their local chapters, but Oklahoma ASDA membership is based on recruitment. We’re lucky, though, because our national dues are subsidized by generous organizations like the Oklahoma Dental Association and Patterson Dental. We are incredibly proud to have been awarded the Gold Crown Award for the Highest Overall Market Share at a Recruited Chapter consecutively for the past 5 years. This means 100% of our students choose to be a part of this incredible organization.

Whether you’re interested in personal and professional development, service, pre-dental outreach, networking, or connecting with other students at national meetings, our chapter offers something for you. I encourage you to take some time to explore what Oklahoma ASDA can do for you, and what you can do for Oklahoma ASDA.
